Primary System Types

Run-of-River (ROR)

How Hydro Energy Works

Three Main Hydropower Processes

Hydro energy harnesses the kinetic and potential energy of flowing or stored water to generate electricity. CHARM Ltd. provides three main hydro energy systems, each with a specific operational process:

Run-of-River (ROR) Hydro

  1. Water Diversion – A portion of river water is diverted through a channel or penstock.
  2. Turbine Spin – The flowing water spins the turbine, converting kinetic energy into mechanical energy.
  3. Electricity Generation – The turbine drives a generator to produce electricity, which is fed directly into the local grid.

Characteristics: Minimal environmental impact; power output depends on seasonal river flow.

Usage: Remote areas, rural electrification, and small communities.

Conventional / Reservoir Hydro

  1. Water Storage – Water is stored in a large dam reservoir.
  2. Controlled Release – Operators release water through turbines as electricity is needed.
  3. Electricity Transmission – The generator converts turbine motion into electricity for the grid.

Characteristics: Highly reliable, controllable, and dispatchable.


Usage: Regional grid supply, industrial demand, water management.

Pumped Storage Hydro

  1. Pumping Phase – During low electricity demand, surplus energy pumps water from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir.
  2. Storage Phase – Water is stored as potential energy in the elevated reservoir.
  3. Generation Phase – During peak demand, water flows back down through turbines to generate electricity.
